Quite simply you can make your own fun. For example:
A couple of years ago I was wandering around in Big W. I saw an elderly gentleman sit on the seat of his walker after telling the person with him that he would wait right there. I noticed he looked a bit upset and unhappy. So as I came up to him I told him that he had the best seat in the shop. He replied he had the only seat in the shop and laughed. We chatted for a few minutes, then I continued my shopping.
This little story still makes me smile. I have done many similar things over the years and here is another instance.
One day I was out shopping for a friend. We walked into a lady’s clothing store. I saw a man standing in the store looking slightly uncomfortable. I told me friend to go on and I would catch up. I went up to the man and told him I really didn’t think anything in that shop would suit him. He laughed and said it wasn’t for him but his wife who was over there. I caught up with my friend who was slightly horrified at what I had done. On the way out the man stopped me and told me he was actually there to give his opinion on the clothes for his wife, although she did what she liked anyway. I told him that was natural but that he had to be there to pay for whatever she chose. That’s right he responded and laughed.
Some other things I like to do for fun that also brings fun into other’s lives are:
- Give professional people permission to laugh if you tell them a joke.
- Go for a walk with a friend and see who can take the most and best photos.
- I smile at people I meet in the street – especially people that look sad or lonely.
- Play the children’s game – that cloud looks like ?
- Play harmless jokes on friends without hurting their feelings. Expect payback.
- Celebrate achievements – do a jig, have a meal out with friends – something cheap can be just as fun as a fancy restaurant, etc.
- When asked what the clock says, say “tick tock!”
- When people say they are good, ask if they mean well or OK or not naughty?
- If someone has a cold as them if they are sure it is not a hot?
- Play word games :
Mix up words that are similar. A friend of mine has a dog named Spud. So one day I asked how Potato was?
Play around with homophones, homonyms and homographs. For example - I am going to check the mail or the female; Doctors are only practicing medicine – their sign say so; Are you on the in-valid pension? - Play with children as they laugh at anything that they feel is funny. Enjoy their games and join in wherever you can.
Until next time – remember, safety first!
P.S. Note why I advocate safety first - “514 charges of non-lethal strangulation, suffocation and choking – or almost three a day – in the six months to October after it became an offence.” David Murray, The Courier-Mail, December 28, 2016 12:00am, url: http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/crime-and-justice/three-charged-daily-with-nonlethal-strangulation-under-domestic-violence-law/news-story/87831edd7299ffa67048ef13a2b8a4bf .
